Ghana Football Association to take legal action over unauthorised betting

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is to take action against betting operators who took bets on its major competitions despite being unauthorised to do so.

At the season launch of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) last month, new GFA President Kurt Okraku banned operators from offering markets on the GPL or any GFA-run competition without a license.

However, the GFA found operators offered odds for GPL matches last weekend without authorisation, prompting the organisation to instruct its lawyers to take action.

In a statement, the GFA said: “We strongly warn all betting companies to stop placing bets on the Ghana Premier League or any GFA product without authorisation from the GFA; failing which the Association will take legal action against them without further notice.

“The GFA hereby also wishes to alert the national regulator, the Gaming Commission of Ghana, of the illegal activities of their licensed betting companies against the GFA and its members.”

Along with banning the use of GFA’s fixtures and results from being used for betting, Okraku also announced last month all participants in domestic football are now prohibited from taking part in betting.

The recent action comes in response to apparent issues with corruption in Ghanaian sport.

Ex-GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi was banned from sport for life in 2018, after being found guilty of breaking bribery and corruption rules.

Meanwhile, GPL team Elmina Sharks appealed to the GFA last month to investigate what they called a ‘fake’ friendly involving their academy, which they say was put together for betting purposes.
