Abeiku Gyekye Jackson, a Ghanaian swimmer with national records in freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, and backstroke and a world champion in him, has won the Men’s 100 LC meters butterfly race. Abeiku has therefore set a new and exciting record for Ghana winning a gold medal in the ongoing 7th African Zone 2 Swimming and Open Water Championship.
Abeiku breaks the present 54.60 seconds record with 53.93 seconds.
A Nigerian, Collins Ebingha also set a record of 55.80 seconds for the silver medal, while Senegalese, Stephen Killian Amiable won the bronze medal went 55.89 seconds record.
Abeiku’s brother Kow Jackson, also won a bronze medal in the men 400 LC meters with a time of 6:11.60 minutes.
Abeiku, born 12 April 2000, started swimming at the age of three in his family swimming pool. His father introduced him to swimming, made him joined a swimming club. He started competing at the age of five. His older brother Kwesi Abbiw Jackson and younger brother Kow Asafua Jackson are also swimmers.
Abeiku represented Ghana in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Abeiku and female swimmer Kaya Forson, who competed in the 200-meter freestyle in Rio, became the first Ghanaians ever to compete in swimming at the Olympic Games.
