Nigerian man invents washbasin with oil drum barrel amid coronavirus hand-washing campaign

People are finding innovative ways to support the prevention of coronavirus spread in their countries. One innovative way is a Nigerian, known on twitter as Swaggzeez invented a washbasin with a used oil drum barrel for his community to be able to wash hands to protect themselves against the virus.

A global campaign for hand-washing and sanitizing is ongoing amid coronavirus pandemic. The virus is rapidly spreading to other countries with some countries experiencing an increase in new infections.

The colorfully designed washbasin for hand-washing is made of a used oil drum barrel, a fixed aluminum sink, and a tap. The finishing is highly attractive, clean and colorful to attract users.

Rwanda, the neatest country in Africa in preventing an outbreak and the spread of the coronavirus has installed a washbasin in the capital at bus stops, banks, shops, and restaurants for people to wash their hands.

Hand washing also known as hand hygiene is crucial in daily life to saves lives. Hand-washing is an act of cleaning the hands with soap and detergents using water to remove dirt and microorganism.

According to The World Health Organization (WHO), an effective way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus include regular hand-washing with soap, rubbing the hand with alcohol-based hand sanitizer, covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or flexed elbow when coughing and sneezing, avoid coming into close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

The best way to wash hands

1.    Wet your hands with clean, running water. It can be warm or cold water. 

2.    Use soap, normal or antibacterial and lather up for about 20 seconds. 

3. Rub your hands together and ensure you get in between your fingers, on the backs of hands, under the nails where germs like to hang out and the wrists.

4.    Rinse your hands well and dry with a clean towel. 

Coronaviruses

According to the World Health Organization, Coronaviruses (COVID-19) is a new strain of the virus that was discovered in 2019. Symptoms of coronaviruses include respiratory symptoms, runny nose, sore throat fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. 

When severe, coronaviruses infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.

Coronaviruses update

According to The World Health Organization (WHO), the coronavirus has infected 184,976 people with over 7,500 dead.

However, about 80,000 people have recovered from the infection, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.

With such an invention by Swaggzeez, many Nigerian would be able to use the oil drum barrel washbasin to wash their hands amid the coronavirus outbreak.
