ACCRA, Ghana – Saturday, May 23, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/—President Nana Akufo-Addo on Friday, 22nd May 2020 at the Jubilee House, Accra, swore into office Justice Clemence Jackson Honyenuga and Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu as Justices of the Supreme Court.
The President stated that both appointed Justices of the Supreme Court met the stringent requirements of Article 128 clause (4) of the Constitution, and have demonstrated the independence of spirit, proven integrity, high moral character, and impartiality of mind to hold this high office.
One pleasing thing noted by the President is that Justice Tanko Amadu is the first Muslim to have been appointed to the highest court of the land.
President Akufo-Addo complimented Justice Amadu for his nomination to the highest court of the land, stating, “by dint of hard work and merit, you have been further elevated…your appointment is well- deserved. You have met the stringent requirements of the constitution and demonstrated the independence of spirit, proven integrity, high moral character and impartiality of mind to hold office,”
“The swearing-in ceremony of Justice Tanko Amadu means that this is the first time in the history of our nation that a Muslim has been appointed to the highest court of the land. I am delighted to have been the President to have the honour of doing so, and to do so appropriately in this Holy Month of Ramadan.” Nana Akufo-Addo stated.
As the President administered the Oaths of Allegiance, Judicial and Secrecy to the Justices of the Supreme Court, he said, “It is important for you to bear in mind that the growth of our nation demands that we have a judiciary that commands the respect of the people by the quality of the delivery of its justice as well as the comportment of its judges,”
Justice Amadu was an Appeals Court Judge where he worked in Nigeria for 19 years. He was running his law firm in 1997 until his appointment to the High Court in 2008 and then promoted to the Court of Appeal in 2012.
The newly appointed Justice Amadu expressed gratitude for the honour and privilege bestowed on him to serve at the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court of Ghana per Article 129 of the Constitution 1992, establishes that The Supreme Court shall be the final court of appeal and shall have such appellate and other jurisdiction as may be conferred on it by this Constitution or by any other law and the Supreme Court shall not be bound to follow the decisions of any other court.
Article 132 states that the Supreme Court shall have supervisory jurisdiction over all courts and over any adjudicating authority and may, in the exercise of that supervisory jurisdiction, issue orders and directions for the purpose of enforcing or securing the enforcement of its supervisory power.
