Evariste Ndayishimiye: Burundi president-elect to begin his term of the presidency on 26 June 2020

ACCRA, Ghana – Monday, June 15, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/—The death of Pierre Nkurunziza on June 8, 2020, left a vacuum at the presidency of Burundi. This led to a court ruling that Burundi should swear-in president-elect Evariste Ndayishimiye as the incumbent as soon as possible.

President-elect His Excellency, General Évariste Ndayishimiye was born in 1968. He is a soldier and politician who survived the ethnic cleansing of Hutu students at the University of Burundi in 1995. 

During the Burundian Civil War, Ndayishimiye was a rebel member of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy After rising to become a militia, he enrolled in the Burundian Army and held several political offices under the late President Pierre Nkurunziza.

Ndayishimiye was endorsed by the late President Pierre Nkurunziza in the 2020 elections. He won with a large majority, 68 per cent of the national vote and will begin his term of the presidency on 26 June 2020.

Ndayishimiye, 52, was the deputy chief of staff of the Burundian Army. He also served as Minister of the Interior and Public Security from 2006 to 2007 before becoming the personal military aide to Nkurunziza till 2014.

Ndayishimiye studied at Wisdom University of Africa and gained a degree in 2014. He is married to Angelique Ndayubaha.
