GHANA- Tuesday, July 14, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/ The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwa has opined that closure of senior high schools due to some recorded cases of COVID-19 is not the best option.
Speaking at a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information earlier this morning, he argued that the move would be “disastrous”.
“we are hoping that when they get to the exam time because we have two or three weeks before they write exams, all issues will subside…but sending them home will be disastrous.”
He said that sending the students home would only increase the number of recorded cases as advised by health experts.
“Closure of schools from the health point is not the best option, it is best we keep them in schools because if we decide to let them go home then we might as well close down the whole country”, he said.
Several senior high schools including the Accra Girls Senior High School and the Dabala Senior High School have recorded cases of COVID-19 barely a month after the government ordered their return to school to complete their final exams.
There have been several bodies that have called for schools to be shut down due to the rise in cases, the National Democratic Congress(NDC) inclusive.
