GHANA-President Nana Akufo-Addo, today Monday, 3rd August 2020 unveiled the first VW vehicles assembled in the newly established VW Assembly Plant in Ghana.
The models assembled in Ghana are Tiguan, Teramont, Amarok, Caddy, Polo and Passat. It is a good day for Mother Ghana, the President stated.
“The VW assembly plant will create a lot of highly skilled jobs, reduce the high amounts of foreign exchange used in the importation of second-hand vehicles, and, thereby, help strengthen the Ghanaian currency, whilst, at the same time, earn the nation foreign exchange through the exportation of made-in-Ghana vehicles.” He added.
President Nana Akufo-Addo also revealed that the Chinese company, Sinotruk, has already been engaged in the assembly of trucks in Ghana.
The President also stated that he is hopeful that other global automobile companies, which have indicated their preparedness to set-up shop in Ghana, will soon follow the remarkable, pioneering example of Volkswagen.
Some Ghanaians asked the President to give the same attention and platform to Ghanaian inventor of cars.
However, Van Der Waal on facebook disagree with them as he wrote, “those claiming the president and NPP government is not supporting Kantanka Autombile, here is the news flash for you.
1. This government has purchased Kantanka cars for government agencies.
2. The government has given a tax waiver on imports for Kantanka Automobile parts for some years (I think it’s 5years, I’m not sure).
3. The government is always present at the annual launching of Kantanka projects…The question is so because we have Kantanka, the president shouldn’t honour invitations from other competitors? Let’s not just type anything to mislead the ignorant people. Research for facts first before you disgrace yourself publicly.”
Volkswagen translates to “people’s car” in German is a German car highly patronized in Ghana. VW was founded in 1937 by the German Labour Front, known for the iconic Beetle and headquartered in Wolfsburg. VW made the largest worldwide sales in 2016 and 2017.
