The Bureau of Public Safety is calling on the National Defence to conduct swift investigations into the grenade explosions that happened on the South La beach.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday, August 5, 2020.
The occurrence injured four children who were suspected to find the grenade and played with it.
In a police statement issued on Monday, August 10, 2020, by the Head of Police Public Affairs Unit in Accra, DSP Effia Tenge it was stated that all children had been “treated and discharged”.

In a press statement released by the BPS, it said that it was “worried over this development and it’s the possible impact on public safety assurance, especially in the lead to election 2020”.

It said that the call to the National Defence was due to the “apparent weakness of the State’s law enforcement in dealing swiftly and robustly with the same, coupled with rogue business elements that may be acting internally and/or externally seeking to seek to profit from a destabilized state”.

The BPS further called on the government to escalate the investigation from the Police CID to the National Defence.
It questioned how military-grade grenades arrived at the shores of the beach four months to presidential elections.

It, however, commended the police force for constantly serving the public with information regarding the matter.
“We commend the police service from swift action in this matter and in providing information and assurances of further investigations to the public”.
