Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor of Liberia has been confirmed to have coronavirus and flown to Ghana on Tuesday, where she is receiving treatment.
The 56-year-old Jewel Howard-Taylor tested positive for the covid-19 on August 10 after fallen ill and developing respiratory complications according to her office.
The news was confirmed by the ministry of health, Liberia through the Health Minister Wilhelmina Jallah. The ex-wife of former jailed Liberian president Charles Taylor.
Liberia like many other African nations has a weak health system which is an open secret but highly exposed by the covid-19 pandemic.
Africans are likely to die from health issues due to lack of quality or inadequate health care delivery, and it has been an issue where many Africans are calling on African leaders to strengthen the health systems.
Liberia has 1,250 confirmed cases, 736 recoveries and 81 deaths. Ghana, on the other hand, has 41,725 covid-19 cases, 39,495 recoveries and 223 deaths.
Jewel Howard-Taylor was elected to the Senate of Liberia in Bong County as a member of the National Patriotic Party. She also served as the Chairperson of the Senate Health and Social Welfare Committee on Gender, Women and Children.
