The Minister of Health Kwaku Agyeman-Manu says government will reconstruct the Central Medical Stores by the end of 2020. Addressing a gathering at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of Urology and Nephrology Centres at the Korle- Bu Maternity, Mr Agyeman-Manu said the facility will be reconstructed before the end of this year in addition to other health infrastructure.
“We have also aligned the construction and equipping of some hospitals before the end of the year. The sub-regional hospital in Tema, the reconstruction of the central medical stores, construction and equipping of Shama district hospitals, construction and equipping of trauma hospitals in Anyinam and Obuasi. Refurbishment and equipping of Ngleshie and Obuasi hospitals again”, he said.
Reports emerged in August 2019 that management of the Central Medical Stores spent a total of GHS 300.000 of drug funds on rent payments for the temporary Central Medical Stores at Spintex. This comes on the back of an Auditor-General report which alleged the misappropriation of drug funds contrary to Regulation 179 of Financial Administration Regulations, 2004. The report also stated that the said amount was paid to P.S.B Realty Company Limited in March 2017.
Before the fire outbreak, the Central Medical Stores was located in Tema and it housed every conceivable drug imported into the country before distribution to the various regions across the country.
Ghana’s stock of medical supplies that were lost in the fire was valued at GHc237 million.
Per agreements with the Global Fund, Ghana was supposed to refund $27 million worth of medical supplies but later pardoned Ghana because according to the Minister, the donors were well aware the country did not the financial capacity to repay the money.
