Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress John Dramani Mahama has described the upcoming general elections as a critical event that would help shape the nation’s destiny.

The former President said the December general elections will play a significant role in shaping the future of the younger generation and that was the reason he was seeking power back. He, therefore, urged all eligible to partake in the exercise.

The flagbearer passed these comments when he paid a courtesy call on Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli State in Ho on Wednesday as part of his campaign tour of the Volta region.

Mr Mahama also noted that the current Akuffo-Addo administration has recorded the lowest economy under the Fourth Republic, adding that, the economy was already struggling before the pandemic came in.

The former President accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of “political short-sightedness and victimisation,” and also threatening national unity asked that the NDC be allowed to present to the country, the party’s well-drafted policies of all-inclusive governance and equal opportunities for all.

Mr Mahama said NPP was a government of “consumption” which only “takes decisions aimed at penalizing political opponents but end up affecting the growth and prosperity of the Ghanaian” whereas the NDC under his leadership had numerous infrastructure projects, which was evident in its spending.

“This election is to rescue the future of our young people, and it is the reason I am running again. We have an appointment with destiny on December 7. Don’t make a mistake. We know that God will not fail us.”

He also promised to mobilise resources and oversee the completion of the hundreds of NDC government projects, which according to him has been abandoned by the governing NPP within the first year of his next administration.

He reiterated his “big push” agenda for infrastructure and apprenticeship packages for the youth as a comeback agenda.

Togbe Afede who is also the President of the National House of Chiefs lauded the flagbearer for providing hope for the youth and noted that Ghana has all in place for improvement and called for development planning devoid of over politicisation.

Togbe Afede said “inclusiveness in planning and executing development projects was a development priority” and asked leaders not to be “consumed by their privileges.”

He condemned tribalism and bemoaned its persistence on the political scene, and advised that the nation fell on truth and unity to excel in peace and prosperity.
