The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it will tomorrow, September 1, 2020, commence sensitization and education on guidelines for the selection of senior high schools.
In a press release signed by the Head of Public Relations Unit for the GES, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, it stated that “management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform the general public particularly parents, candidates, and teachers that the sensitization and education on this year’s guidelines for school selection into Senior High Schools will commence tomorrow Tuesday 1st September 2020”.
The exercise will be visible in “infographics, short videos in nine Ghanaian languages, flyers and physical presence of officers in all schools to embark on the sensitization drive”.
The selection of schools for final-year junior high students is scheduled for Monday, September 21, 2020 through to Saturday, October 31, 2020.
The statement added that short codes will be made available to students to confirm their school selection before official placement.
“There would be an opportunity for candidates to text to a short code and confirm their school choices before actual placement will be done. Details of the short code will be made available in due course”, the statement contained.
This year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will commence on Monday, September 14, 2020, and will span through to Friday, September 18, 2020.
The examination will commence on Monday with English Language and Religious and Moral Education (RME). Integrated Science, and Basic Design and Technology (BDT) will be written on Tuesday with Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and French on Wednesday. Mathematics, Ghanaian Language and Culture will be written on Thursday with the examination ending on Friday with Social Studies.
This year’s examination has been pushed from the usual June period due to the impact of COVID-19 as schools were closed.
Students were directed by the government to return to prepare for the final exams.
According to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) “the examination is both for certification and selection into Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes in Ghana. The results of the examination is based on Continuous Assessment and the external examination. The Continuous Assessment forms 30% whilst the external examination forms 70% of the total assessment”.
