GHANA (African Post Online)- First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo has refunded the allowance paid to her.
A letter to the Chief of Staff from the Office of the First Lady indicates a presentation of a Cheque worth GHS 899,097.84 being the full refund for monies received from 7th January 2017 to date as allowances given to Her.

She added that she remains committed to her role as the First Lady and is devoted to her charity work and championing the wellbeing of women and children in Ghana.

Ghanaians were unhappy on hearing that Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Samira Bawumia were considered under Article 71 officeholders by Prof Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu-led Presidential Committee on Emoluments.

According to Prof Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu-led Presidential Committee on Emoluments, the First Lady would receive a salary equivalent to a Minister of State who is a Member of Parliament (MP).
The First Lady would receive 80% of the salary of a Minister of State who is an MP if her husband serves a full term as President or 100% of the salary of a Minister of State who is a Member of Parliament (MP) if her husband finishes two or more full terms as President.

A similar request was made for the Second Lady to be paid a salary equivalent to a Cabinet Minister who is not an MP.

With public anger and attacks on her personality, the First Lady described some of the comments from the general public as negative and distasteful, seeking to portray her as a venal, self-serving and self-centred woman who does not care about the plight of the ordinary Ghanaians.

She added that she did not request to be paid any allowance, and such payment has been in existence and was made to the previous first ladies in the course of the 4th Republic before she becomes the First Lady.

Some questioned what she uses her monies for and why she needed that amount of money. Some also defended her by arguing that she embarks on several charity works across the country with Rebecca Foundation.

The Second Lady, Samira Bawumia had also released a press statement indicating that she would refund all monies paid to her.

Some Ghanaians have turned their wrath on the Former First Lady, Lordina Mahama, demanding a full refund from her.
