PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa says the continent must dispel myths, narratives and perspectives of a continent in perpetual conflict and crisis through the use of own intellectuals.
He said this at the launch of the first edition of The Africa Factbook in Harare which illustrates that Africans are a peace-loving people, who have given more to the world than taken from it.
“In the Fact Book, we see that Africans have always sought human progress, neighbourly coexistence and the common good. Even today, we must dispel the myths, narratives and perspectives of a continent in perpetual conflict and crisis.
“African intellectuals have a special contribution to make in the development of our continent. I, therefore, challenge our scholars and media to continue to take ownership, leadership and pride in writing and popularising our own stories,” he said.
President Mnangagwa noted that there is a need to develop new technologies, innovations and systems that will spur economic industrialisation through improved agricultural practices.
“Furthermore, let us draw from our African heritage and knowledge to develop new technologies, innovations and systems that will improve our agriculture practices, accelerate the industrialisation and modernisation of our economies and ultimately lead to a better quality of life for our people.
“Our indigenous African knowledge on peacebuilding, conflict resolution and good governance must guide us wherever armed conflict and violence occurs in our motherland. This rich heritage must further inform us as we devise African solutions to African problems
“Finally, I invite the world to shift its perspective of Africa based on indisputable facts, truths and realities such as those serialised in this first edition of the African Factbook,” he said.
The Fact Book is expected to contribute towards the cultural, educational; mental and economic emancipation of the African people while debunking narratives and myths from outside the continent.
