The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi has disclosed the bonus structure for athletes who will represent Ghana at the 2019 African Games in Morocco.

According to Prof Twumasi, the budget of approximately $1.28m approved for Ghana’s 139-member contingent of made up of 91 athletes, 29 coaches, and 19 Management members makes provision for athletes who win medals in individual and team events.

In a video published on the NSA website, Prof Twumasi stated that although it was a great honor for the athletes to represent their country, the budget has some monetary rewards.

He said bonus rewards of $3000, $2000 and $1000 will be presented to athletes who win respective gold, silver or bronze medals in the single or individual sports events.

Athletes who compete in the team sports event would be due $2000, $1500 and $1000 respectively if they win gold, silver or bronze medals.

Team Ghana will participate in 14 disciplines. The disciplines are athletics, badminton, volleyball, boxing, cycling, fencing, football, judo, karate, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting.

The 2019 African Games will be held from August 19-31 in the Moroccan city of Rabat.

Budget

Prof Twumasi said the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) and the National Sports Authority (NSA) approved a budget of $1,275,273.34 for the Games.

He said in terms of comparison with the amount budgeted for the 2015 African Games in Congo Brazzaville the amount was quite low.

“In terms of comparison, I think that this is quite low as we remember, I think that in 2015, there was a budget of about four million which was used for the Congo Brazzaville African Games,” Prof Twumasi said.
