ACCRA, Ghana – Thursday, June 25, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/—Ama K Abebrese is calling on the government to abolish medical examination fees for all victims of rape, defilement and sexual assault in Ghana.
The actor, producer, philanthropist and TV presenter is championing the action through Change.org (http://chng.it/8TFxcf2MtT) by appealing to people to sign the petition.
According to the actor, victims of rape, sexual assault, and defilement ought to pay between 300 to 800 GHS ($45-$160) to access medical examination to pursue justice.
She is raising awareness and calling for the abolishing of fees paid by these victims. Other celebrities like Kafui Danku and John Dumelo have joined her to encourage everyone to take action.
Some people may not be able to afford the 300 to 800 GHS ($45-$160) and will therefore not report cases and demand justice especially in Ghana where families and friends including victims of rape will prefer to keep rape a secret because of discrimination and ridicule in society. 300 Paying 300 to 800 GHS ($45-$160) can contribute to people choosing to settle rape cases out of court.
The out of court settlement of rape cases must not become a precedent anymore in our society if we are serious with enforcing the law on rape and stoping it.
Abolishing fees paid by victims of rape, sexual assault, and defilement is laudable.
Chapter Six of the Criminal Offences Act of Ghana, 1960 (Act 29), as amended by Section 11 of the Criminal Code Amendment Act 1998 (Act 554), covers nine sexual offences: rape; defilement; carnal knowledge of an idiot, imbecile or mental patient; indecent assault; unnatural carnal knowledge; incest; householder permitting defilement of a child; procuration; and seduction or prostitution of a child under 16 years.
Section 98 of Act 29 defines rape as a person having carnal knowledge of a female of not less than sixteen years without her consent.
According to Section 99 of Act 29, carnal knowledge is complete upon proof of the least degree of penetration of the vagina by a penis.
We must intensify our education on rape and stop accepting the obnoxious excuses rapist give. Parents, schools, and churches must join the campaign to stop rape and support victims.
Individuals in societies must champion courses that may lead to reduction and stopping of rape, sexual abuse and defilement in the country.
