Coca Cola to cut off number of staff

The Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana Limited has announced its intention to lay off some of its staff as the company faces the impact of COVID-19.

In a memorandum served to the staff of the company, dated 31 August 2020 and signed by the Business Unit Managing Director WAC of the Company, Felix Gomis.

The Company explained that the move was necessitated by the challenges it had been facing over the years which has beeb “exacerbated by the COVID-19 scourge and the numerous industrial actions experienced in the last few months”.

The statement added that the Ministry of Labour Relation had been alerted of the decision.

“In accordance with the provisions of Section 65 of the Labour Act 2003 (ACT 651), management has today, notified the Chief Labour Officer of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations of the company’s intention to declare a redundancy which will affect the employment of a number of employees”.

“In accordance with Section 65 (2), all affected employees shall receive a ‘Redundancy Pay’ and in lieu of notice, payment shall be made for the notice period, where necessary”.

“The leadership of the respective Trade Unions, ICU and UNICOF, have in accordance with law been notified, and management will be with them to discuss the terms and conditions of the severance,” the memo said.

It added that the decision will be finalized after the various consulted unions and management of the company had agreed on the terms of the lay off.

“After the Unions and the management have agreed to the terms and conditions of the severance, the details shall be communicated to the affected staff through their Line Managers,” it added.

Until the final decision has been made however, the company has asked its staff to “continue to carry out their obligations in accordance with the existing Collective Agreements and the Labour Act 2003 until the effective date of termination”.

This seems to be an international move aa Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Company that the company will under a major reorganization of its workforce that will translate to thousands of job cuts and buyouts for employees in the United States and Canada.
