Minister of Finance, Hon. Ken Ofori Atta says that the government would reduce the Communication Service Tax from nine percent to five percent.
He said that “in the short term we would reduce the Communication Service Tax (CST) from nine percent to five percent”.
He made this while delivering the mid year budget review.
He added that the government would “count on the Telcos to match this reduction in the CST to match the tariffs”.
In June 2019, the CST was increased from six percent to nine percent by the government. The increase which was announced by the minister of finance last year during the mid year budget review took effect on October 1, 2019.
He further stated that in line with speeding up digitisation in the country “government will work with the Telcos, Electricity Company of Ghana to roll out fibre across the country on the back of the electricity distribution network so every citizen nationwide Mr. Speaker will have access to high speed broadband”.
Digitising the country was one of the promises of the Akufo Addo led administration. The vice president Mahamudu Bawumia has been put in charge of this policy.
In light of this policy, the vice president hinted at digitising the rent control system of the country.
