The Ghana Health Service has updated Ghana’s COVID-19 cases, confirming 313 cases with six (6) deaths.
The regional distribution of the cases are as follows: Greater Accra Region has most cases (274) followed by the Ashanti Region (25), Northern Region (10), Upper West Region (1), Eastern Region (1), Upper East Region (1) and Central Region (1).
The figures previously stood at five deaths and 287 confirmed cases, however, the GHS says “Enhanced contact tracing and testing is ongoing in Ghana and has resulted in an increased number of confirmed COVID-19 cases.”
The Ghana Health Service said a total of 161 cases were reported from the routine surveillance, 37 from enhanced surveillance activities and those from travellers under mandatory quarantine in both Accra and Tamale are 115.
“With regards to enhanced contact tracing and testing, as at 7th April 2020, a total of 11,016 samples from contacts have been processed and 37 (0.34%) have been confirmed positive for COVID-19.”
Elsewhere in Liberia, President George Weah has declared that a state of emergency beginning on Friday because of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the BBC, Mr Weah has called for an emergency session of parliament so that MPs can endorse the order that will impose restrictions on movement across the country.
The emergency law will last for three weeks and is renewable “until the threat to Liberia from the COVID-19 virus no longer exists”.
“Throughout this period, residents may leave home only for essential journeys like reasons of health and food which should be restricted to your local communities and be limited to a single person per household for a maximum of one hour,” the president said.
Mr Weah said he was taking the measure because Covid-19 had “entered a new phase” and it needed to be contained.
Liberia has recorded 14 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with four people dying, the BBC reported.
