GHANA- The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations last week held a 2-Day Workshop to begin processes to review the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) in Accra.
Participants agreed that there is a need for the law to be reviewed to meet the current demands of the work environment. The Labour Act 2003 has been in existence for over 17 years.
The Employment ministry is expected to build consensus on the various areas identified and then a proposal will be sent to the minister and cabinet for consideration before a draft bill is sent to parliament.
Since 2018 the European Union has supported the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR) in its efforts to strengthen the implementation of the National Employment Policy. This support is provided under the Ghana Employment and Social Protection (GESP) Programme that contributes to inclusive growth in Ghana by supporting social protection and employment systems.
The Ministry launched a series of consultations to review the employment legal framework and – if agreed by all parties – to submit proposals for the amendment of the Labour Act and the legislative instruments.
The EU appreciates the consultative approach applied by the MELR and recognizes the need to engage a large range of stakeholders such as the Trade Union Congress, the Employers Association, the Federation of Labour, the National Tripartite Committee and many others to ensure a sound revision and an optimum implementation of the Labour Act and its instruments.
