Ethiopia suspects the United States of trying to deprive them of $130 million in development aid to put pressure on them in the context of discussions on the Great Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Ethiopian Ambassador to the United States, Fitsum Arega said, “We asked for clarification on the US decision not to release the $ 130 million allocated to Ethiopia. We have heard that this is related to the ongoing negotiations on the Great Renaissance Dam.”
The dam is being built with equity for more than $ 4 billion on the Blue Nile, on which Egypt depends for its freshwater supply. She fears that her water supply will be compromised.
Ethiopia for its part believes that this will not happen has the right to use the resources of its territory for development.
The negotiations started since 2016, under the aegis of several mediators including the United States in early 2020, to reach an agreement between the two countries have still not been successful. In the meantime, Ethiopia started filling the dam during July.
