Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Tuesday, June 30, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/ The death of a popular music star in Ethiopia has led to a demonstration in Ethiopia. Hachalu Hundessa who sings political songs was shot on Monday night to death on the outskirts of the capital, Addis Ababa according to FANA Broadcasting Corporate reported.
The 34-year-old uses his musical talent to advocate for the rights of the country’s Oromo ethnic group. His song became an anthem which has led to protests and the cause of previous prime minister in 2018.
Hachalu had earlier said that he had received death threats.
The police are investigating the killing.
Meanwhile, his fans and well-wishers demonstrate on the street on Tuesday leading to the death of at least four people as protesters set fire to tyres leading to the police dispersing the crowd with tear gas.
“There are a lot of casualties, most of them are bullet injuries. Three patients died and there are still critical patients,” he told AFP.
The internet has also been shut down in parts of the country as the protests spread in Oromia regional state.
“The motive for the singer’s killing was not immediately clear but police have detained “some suspects,” Addis Ababa police commissioner Getu Argaw told FANA.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called for calm in the country and offered condolences and promised an investigation
