The former President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was taken into police custody on Monday, where he is being held under charges of corruption during his reign as the Mauritanian president.
Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is facing charges for the mismanagement of oil revenues, the selling of state-owned real estate, and the liquidation of a public company and his family is also facing similar charges on corruption.
A number of Aziz’s ministers have also been placed under legal supervision.
The former President being held in the Police Academy in Nouakchott is accused of awarding huge contracts illegally during his tenure in 2008 to 2019.
Several former ministers have had similar charges brought against them.
The politician’s lawyer, Takioullah Eidda, said he was not allowed to assist his client during the investigations.
“Urgent! As a lawyer, I am prevented from assisting my client, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, during the police investigation which he is currently subject to,” Eidda wrote on Facebook.
Mauritania is another African country apart from Algeria charging its former leader on corruption. Algeria is currently charging two former prime ministers for corruption.
