ACCRA, Ghana – Saturday, May 30, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/—Former President of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings has added his voice to other African leaders to show displeasure and condemn the killing of an African American, George Floyd, 46 years in Minnesota.
A video captured by an African American woman shows four police officers handcuffed Floyd, face lying on the ground with Derek Chauvin kneeling on his neck which eventually caused his death.
Mr Rwalings expressed his views on twitter that it is heart-warming to see Americans react the way they are to the unfortunate incident.
According to the former President, the event is shameful and the unfortunate circumstances could have afforded Trump a grand opportunity to rescue his image a little, but trust him to totally screw it up!
Rawlings might be showing resentment in the way President Trump is handling the situation after tweeting at black protesters in Minnesota as thugs and also calling for police to shot looters.
He believed that President Trump might not only screwed the issue but could escalate matters further.
He added in another tweet, ” If some of these atrocities, especially from some white police officers against black citizens, cannot shock the American populace to see evidence of their own decline, what can? How can a police officer be the source of such cruel, violent death…”
Likewise, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat pronounced on Friday that the recent death of George Floyd in the US amounted to murder.
“I strongly condemn the murder of George Floyd that occurred in the United States of America at the hands of law enforcement officers, and wishes to extend his deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.” He tweeted.
“Recalling the historic Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU) Resolution on Racial Discrimination in the United States of America made by African Heads of State and Government, at the OAU’s First Assembly Meeting held in Cairo, Egypt from 17 to 24 July 1964, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission firmly reaffirms and reiterates the African Union’s rejection of the continuing discriminatory practices against Black citizens of the United States of America,” his online statement added.
There have been a series of violent protest in America over the killing of George Floyd and a call to the end of the killing of Blacks in America as they seek justice for George Floyd.
A peaceful protest turned violent and spread across America from Minnesota to New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Columbus, San Jose, Seattle, Louisville, Florida, Las Vegas, Boston, Virginia, Washington DC and many others for the fourth night as protested besieged the White House today which has been locked down.
Over 50 protested have been arrested and some police officers injured in New York. Many people across the world have expressed anger and shock at the recent inhumane killing of Floyd. Celebrities in America like Beyonce, Coco Gauff, Cardi B, Will smith, Taylor Swift, LeBron James, and Snoop Dogg among others.
On May 29, Derek Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter after being fired. Protested took to the street to demand his arrest and to be charged for murder with three other officers who were seen in the video pinning Floyd down.
Trayvon Martin, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor are few African Americans to mention in recent times killed by the police in the US.
