Measures have been outlined for final year students who completed the just ended West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).
The measures were contained in a joint statement from the Ghana Health Service (GES) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) signed by the Director-General of GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku Amankwa and the Director-General of the GHS, Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye.
As part of the measures put in place by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in easing restrictions brought about by COVID-19, final year senior high schools were directed to return to school to write their exit examinations.
The students reported to school on June 20 2020 and begun the WASSCE on Monday, July 20, 2020.
The examination process is expected to end on September 4, 2020.
It is noteworthy that various senior high schools across the country reported cases of COVID barely a month after the president’s directive for students to return to school.
Accra Girls SHS was the first to record cases of the virus with six of the students testing positive, a teacher and his wife. The school recorded a total of 55 cases.
Mawuli SHS, Bishop Herman College, Mawuko Girls and Dabala SHS also recorded cases of the virus.
Archbishop Porter Girls SHS, Ahantaman Girls SHS, Diabene SHS and Adiembra SHS, all in the Western Region also reported cases of COVID.
In the joint statement from the GES and GHS, it indicated that schools where no cases of COVID has been recorded, students can be dispatched to their various homes.
“Any school where no positive case of COVID-19 has been recorded, the students can vacate and go home”, as contained in the statement.
It further stated that schools that had recorded cases of COVID, but have not recorded new cases in the last two weeks can also dispatch their students home after the exam.
“Any school that recorded a positive case but had not reported any new positive case within the last two weeks, the students can vacate and go home”.
It added that “any school that recorded a positive case with the last two weeks, all contacts will have their return home delayed for assessment and observation before they can be allowed to go home and parents of such students will be notified”.
The GES and GHS commended the staff and final year students for “the successful completion of their examinations”.
