GHANA- President Nana Akufo-Addo who stood on the ticket of the National Patriotic Party was on Monday 7th December re-elected into office as the President of Ghana.
The Presidential results were announced yesterday 9th December in the evening by the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensah after Ghanaians anxiously waited for the results for over 24 hours.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana, however, blamed delays in announcing the results within 24 hours to rainfalls in parts of the country.
According to the commission, the rains obstructed the transportation of ballot boxes from those polling stations to the collation centres.
Nana Akufo-Addo won with 6,730,413 votes which represent 51.295 per cent of the total valid votes cast while his closest competitor, John Dramani Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) got 6,214,889 votes representing 47.366 per cent.
The total valid votes cast was 13, 434,574 representing 79 per cent of the total registered voters.
Mrs Jean Mensa described the elections as “incident-free” and “peaceful.” She asserted that the technology deployed on Election Day worked efficiently and the usual hustle and long queues at polling stations in past elections were all absent.
She also revealed that elections were funded without donor support.
“Again, we can be proud of the fact that for the first time in our history, the election was funded without donor assistance. I can assure you that we put our resources to prudent use.
Ghanaians expressed excited for a peaceful election as well as maintaining their standards in Africa as a country with strong democratic stands.
Many Ghanaians took to social media to congratulate each other for showing the world how democracy works. “Proudly Ghanaian”, Ghana won, Ghana to the world” were some common cliches used on Twitter.
A Twitter user believes that the parliamentary elections result even show how diverse and democratic progress Ghana has made.
The Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said President Akufo-Addo will soon start work in his second term in office.
