The Minister for Education, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh says that the government is set to introduce a professional teacher allowance of Ghc 1200cedis per year for professional teachers.

He made this known while speaking on the floor of parliament today.
Speaking on Eye witness news on Citi FM, the president of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) says that the move is welcomed by his outfit.

Explaining the criteria for professional teachers he said that “the Ghana Education Service is now having a policy that you will not be recruited into the service if you’re not a professional teacher, but we still have some nonprofessional teachers in the service. Then we also have the teaching and the nonteaching. They took into consideration the professional requirements and expectations of a professional teacher in renewing your license. They considered that to calculate how much each person would get, that is the teaching and the non-teaching”.

He says however that even though it is a yearly payment, his outfit insists that it should be paid through the controller and accountant general’s office.

“This payment is a one-time payment, it is a yearly payment. What we have insisted is that it should be paid through controller and accountant general. It should not go through any regional or district office of education. It should not be sent to any school to be paid to teachers”.
