Julius Malema ‘welcomes’ possible jail sentence for alleged assault

It seems the EFF leader is sticking to his principles once more. Julius Malema says that a jail sentence wouldn’t bother him too much…

EFF leader Julius Malema and his fellow Red Beret Mbuyiseni Ndlozi have both appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, to answer to charges of assault laid against them after an incident at Winnie Mandela’s funeral in 2018. As expected, the acid-tongued Malema had plenty to say about the proceedings.

EFF assault case postponed

The matter will return to the dock on 23 June, having been postponed following a brief address from the judge. The pair have been accused of physically beating on of the security guards at the memorial service. Julius Malema denied any wrongdoing, and claimed he would have “panel-beaten” the guard had he actually laid a punch:

“If I had laid a hand on him, I would have panel-beated him (sic). It would have been worse than what you saw. I don’t play when I lay hands. It is a waste of time. That’s why the magistrate ruled against the media’s application [to film the proceedings] because it is a useless case. I don’t know what you are all doing here.”

“It’s a waste of the court’s time and we will deal with it. We are here because we had a scuffle with a white man. If it was [a] black man, they could have said the two of you go for mediation and find each other. But, you don’t touch a white person as a black person.” I didn’t do any assault. Mbuyiseni didn’t do that.”

Julius Malema’s “so be it” attitude towards prison

It’s fair to say the EFF head-honcho does not agree with the decision to file a court case against him. Lobby group AfriForum are strongly pursuing the matter, clashing heads with their political nemesis. Julius Malema, however, does not fear the consequences of his alleged actions. In fact, he doesn’t seem too bothered about the possibility of a jail sentence, should he be found guilty later this year.

“All we were fighting for is to enter the cemetery and go and bury our mother. We had all the right to be there and he was not going to stop us. If we are going to prison for having fought to bury Winnie Mandela, so be it. Let it be. We are being arrested for fighting to bury a revolutionary. I think it was a genuine cause.”
