Manchester City continues to mull over the idea of acquiring the goal wizard, Lionel Messi for a long-term deal and are considering to give the Barcelona captain the chance to end his playing career at MLS outfit, New York City.

Messi, yesterday announced his intentions of leaving Barcelona. He has demanded to leave by activating the clause in his contract that allows him to move to another club on free transfer. The 33-year-old player’s contract expires at the end of the 2020/21 season but his legal team believes that the clause will allow him to terminate that contract unilaterally. What motivated Messi to make up is his mind about his future at Barcelona was his recent meeting with the side’s new Manager, Ronald Koeman. Koeman is reported to have told the star that his privileges at the Spanish are gone; a statement Messi reacted furiously at, making up his mind that it is time he moved on.

Having confirmed his desire to leave, attention has now been drawn to where the six-times Ballon d’Or winner will be heading next considering how very few clubs will be able to afford a player of his calibre. Manchester City has been observing the discord between Barcelona and Messi and has already been crunching and adding numbers to find out whether they can afford Messi within the provisions of the Financial Fair Play (FFP).

It is understood that Pep Guardiola has already spoken with Messi and his camp about a potential deal for the player at Manchester City. And with the free transfer clause activated, it seems Manchester City has a better chance at acquiring one of the best players in the world. It is said that Manchester City is even prepared to give the player the chance to retire in MLS with New York City FC, a club owned by Manchester City Football Group.
