The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has held a commemoration of death ceremony for late former President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills at the Asomdwe Park, earlier today to mark his remembrance anniversary.
Many sympathizers including former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Dramani Mahama were in attendance to pay their respect to the late President.
Speaking at the ceremony, Former President John Mahama and flagbearer of the party said Ghanaians yearn for the peace and stability the late Prof. Mills represented and has pledged to do everything within his outfit to restore the peace and tranquility that has eluded the Ghanaian people under the NPP government, if voted into power.
According to Mr Mahama, the late President Mills’ administration was characterized by peace and unity among Ghanaians which facilitated development.
He stressed further that if voted in to power in the ensuing December polls, he will commit to bring back that peace Ghanaians once enjoyed.
“Today Ghanaians are crying for a nation where there will be justice for all, irrespective of your political affiliation or your ethnic origin. Today Ghanaians are crying for a nation where all of us will be considered as citizens united in our diversity. Today Ghanaians are crying for a nation where shall be equal before the law. May God grant us this peace and unity. I stand today before the tomb that holds the mortal remain of the prince of peace and I pledge that I will continue his fight for the peace of his country.”
“May this anniversary of his death be a turning point in the fortunes of our nation. May his peace and grace guide us as a nation. May his peace and grace, guide us as a party to the victory we so desire in the elections of December 2020 so that we shall restore to this country the peace and unity we once enjoyed,” he stated.
The late Prof Mills passed on three days after his birthday while serving as President of Ghana. He would have turned 76 years old on July 21, 2020. The then Vice President, John Mahama took over as President after his demise and consequently the flagbearer of the party, and won the 2012 elections.
The NDC and family of late Prof Mills organize public lectures annually to honour his memory but due to the pandemic, the event was cancelled and rather replaced with a wreath-laying ceremony this year.
