NHIS Card is a better form of identification compared to a birth certificate- Supreme Court

GHANA- Thursday, July 16, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/  The Supreme Court of Ghana has ruled unanimously that a birth certificate is not a form of identification. According to the court, the document does not necessarily establish “the identity of the bearer”.

This development came as a result of a case filed by a private citizen Mark Takyi Banson which the court delivered judgement on June 25 together with the case filed by the opposition NDC.

The NDC wanted the current voters identification card to be used in the registration exercise. Mr Banson, on the other hand, made a case for the inclusion of birth certificate insisting that it proves the identity of prospective voters as Ghanaians who are above 18.

The Supreme Court, however, dismissed these two reliefs postponed its full judgement to July 15.

As written by Justice Ashie Klottey, the judgement states that a birth certificate does not connect its holder to the information it contains. Adding that the certificate provides no form of proof that its bearer is a Ghanaian citizen.

The judgement further stated that comparing the National Health Insurance Cards to the birth certificate, the former is better than the latter in this case.

It is, however, worth noting that, the birth certificate is used as a document source for various registrations such as the passport which is one of the requirements one will need for the new voter registration card.
