Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba has tested positive for the COVID-19 and has been dropped from the National team squad called up for the Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Sweden, according to Didier Deschamps, the manager for the France National Team. He has been left out together Tottenham Hotspur’s Tanguy Ndombele.
Pogba was due to be called to join the National team but when he tested positive for the virus, he was dropped out of consideration for selection, his spot taken by 17-year-old midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.
In a press conference, Deschamps said, “I’ve completed at the very last minute a change in the list, because Paul Pogba, who was previously on the list, unfortunately for him he carried out a test yesterday which was returned as positive this morning. So, at the last moment, he had to be replaced by Eduardo Camavinga”.
Reports say that Pogba is asymptomatic but the positive on the test taken forces Deschamps’ hands to let go one of his key midfielders in order to protect the other players in the squad. This, however, provides the chance for young Camavinga to expand his horizon in football, gain experience as he plays alongside amazing players and the chance to represent his nation.
For Pogba, this means that he will have to spend the next 14 days in isolation which will also his participation in Manchester United’s pre-season preparation for the English Premier League, beginning next week due to the extension they received as a result of their participation in the UEFA Europa League; a competition in which they reached the semi-finals.
He should, however, be able to play in the English side’s first game at the beginning of the 2020/21 season against Crystal Palace on the 19th of September. France visits Sweden’s home for their first UEFA Nations League encounter on Friday, September 5 before they host their game against Croatia on September 8.
