The Central Regional Police Command has arrested the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Honourable Mavis Hawa Koomson. This comes on the back of a misunderstanding that took place at a registration centre in Kasoa on Monday, which resulted in the Special Development Initiatives Minister, firing a gun.
The Minister told the media she only fired the gunshot out of self defense because her life was threatened by some thugs alleged to be affiliated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Despite the above justification, the act has been condemned by many Ghanaians and Civil Society Organizations who have called for the resignation and subsequent prosecution of the Minister.
Responding to this development, Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddy Blay says the calls for the Minister’s resignation and prosecution are premature considering that Madam Koomson was the victim in the said shooting incident.
Currently, Madam Hawa Koomson is being interrogated by CID investigators. Meanwhile, the four suspects who were arrested in connection with the incident have been granted bail by a Cape Coast circuit court to the tune of ¢30,000 each with two sureties for which one must be a government worker with a net salary of ¢2000.
