President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has been elected as the new Chairman of Economic Community West African States (ECOWAS) at the 57th ECOWAS Summit held in Niamey, capital of Niger.
President Akuffo-Addo takes over administration from the President of the Republic of Niger, President Mahamadou Issoufou. The President is slated to give his acceptance speech later in the course of the summit.
Leaders at this year’s ECOWAS summit, which is currently being held at the Mahatma Ghandi International Conference Centre will among other things, discuss reports from the 44th Ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council.
President Akuffo-Addo is the second Ghanaian President to have been elected as the Chairman of the ECOWAS after Former President Mahama took over from the Ivorian President Allasane Ouattara.
This development comes at a very crucial time considering that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is all set to launch its manifesto later today. The NDC postponed the launch from September 1, to today September 7, in order for the party’s National Executive Committee and Council of Elders to approve all the policy programmes in the document.
