GHANA, Monday, July 27, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/— President Akufo Addo says that reduction of Communications Service Tax (CST) would take effect in September 2020.
The Minister of Finance, Hon. Ken Ofori Atta disclosed on Thursday, July 23, 2020 disclosed that the government would reduce the CST from 9% to 5%.
Speaking on the floor of parliament on Thursday, he said that “in the short term we would reduce the Communication Service Tax (CST) from nine percent to five percent”.
The president in his address to the nation on Sunday, July 26, 2020 about measures taken to fight the coronavirus and alleviating citizens of its effect stated however that the reduction would be implemented in September this year.
“The Communication Service Tax has also been reduced from 9% to 5% effective September 2020.”
In June 2019, the CST was increased from six percent to nine percent by the government. The increase which was announced by the minister of finance last year during the mid year budget review took effect on October 1, 2019.
Various telecommunications networks received some backlash from the Ministry of Communications, under Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful for their upfront charging of the tax to their consumers.
The various Telcos were directed to stop the upfront deduction of the tax.
