The Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives has agreed that various reports of ill-treatments against Nigerians in Ghana are false.

Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila said that “the issue at hand is basically a misconception and misinformation”.

The Speaker led a delegation to Ghana to discuss issues after the two countries after the implementation of the Investment Promotion Centre Act 2013, Act 865.

Amongst the issues the two was the purported abuse of Nigerians living in Ghana, highlighting on Nigerian traders in Ghana.

The delegation arrived in Ghana on Wednesday, August 3, 2020 for a two-day visit and met with the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Ocquye.

Addressing the President and Speaker of Parliament, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila accepted that he will sensitise his citizens about the misconceptions he had come learn about to foster stronger relations between both countries.

“As to what exactly is going on in Ghana as far as Nigerians are concerned, we have taken time to educate our people here about those misconceptions. We deliberated and resolved that whatever needs to be done on both sides, to make sure that this relationship remains the relationship it used to be and still is, we will do”, he said.

He further appealed to the President to review the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act in order to reduce the surcharge on foreign investors in Ghana.

“We have appealed to Parliament that if it is possible at all, to please look again at the issues as far as the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act is concerned, then they should please do so. If it is not possible, then let us look at ways where the pain can be a little bit reduced, or the difficulties in meeting those expectations espoused in the law can be reduced”, he stressed.

As a response to the request, President Akufo-Addo said that his outfit will seriously consider the plea presented by the Nigerian delegation.

“The review that you are asking for, why not? If that is worth doing from our mutual perspectives, it will make a lot of sense, so you can take it for granted that the request that you have made will be treated seriously and we will have a look at it,” President Akufo-Addo noted.
