GHANA- Wednesday, July 15, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/ The Deputy Health Minister, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye has revealed that a school would be shut down after it has recorded a 14 to 15 per cent infection rate of the COVID-19.

The government says it will use this approach to make decisions on whether or not to close down schools that have recorded COVID-19 cases.

Speaking on Asempa FM, he stated that should a school reach that mark, the government would take the appropriate measures.

“If you have 500 students in the school if you get 35 that amount to seven per cent of the number. We either make them go home or find a way to deal with them separately. The allowed per cent is 7 per cent. If you have 14 or 15 per cent of the school population it is alarming”, he said.

His comments come on the back of protests of parents of students at the Accra Girls Senior High School who have made protests after being refused entry into the school after it was hit by COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Kwasi Opoku Amankwa has said it would be “disastrous” to close schools.

Also, a junior high school in the Oti region has become the first JHS to record a covid-19 case since schools opened.

As many schools have recorded covid-19 cases, the Government has urged parents to be calm. However, some university students express fear and discomfort being in school at this moment when interviews by African Post Online. They believe schools can reopen next year when the COVID-19 cases are controlled and their safety is not at risk. Some students also decided to avoid school completely.
