ACCRA, Ghana – Friday, June 19, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/—Not all skins are the same. People with different skin conditions like vitiligo, albinism, extremely dark skin, freckles are treated differently and discriminated on. 

Today, people with these different skin types are challenging the status quo and now greasing the fashion runway, adverting for beauty and fashion companies and are making millions of dollars.

Even though many get bullied and abused, they are keen on changing societies mindset about how they should be seen and treated.

However, the world is changing, as many people see things differently. Thanks to technology and social media, where many people can use these platforms to champion change. 

Today they have been able to change mindest and call for inclusion to end discrimination and stigmatization levelled against them.

Vitiligo 

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes loss of skin colour in patches. Sometimes, vitiligo starts with just a discoloured dots on the skin, which later on becomes big. It affects any part of the body, including the tongue and even inside the mouth. 

A famous international model with vitiligo is Winnie Harlow. She is a Canadian model and publicly speaks on vitiligo. She contested in Tyra banks America’s next top model in the US.

Albinism 

Albinism is a congenital disorder characterized in humans by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. Albinism is associated with some vision defects, such as photophobia, nystagmus, and amblyopia. Lack of skin pigmentation makes for more susceptibility to sunburn and skin cancers.

Today, they are a lot of models who are making millions from being albinos. Some are into modelling, advertising and advocacy. 

Thando Hopa

Thando Hopa is a South African model, activist, and lawyer. She is the first woman with albinism to be on the cover of Vogue.

Freckles

Freckles are small brown spots on your skin, often in areas that get sun exposure. In most cases, freckles are harmless. They form as a result of the overproduction of melanin, which is responsible for skin and hair colour.

In recent times, we have seen many models with freckles and also makeup apps and emojis adding freckles to acknowledge people with these unique skin conditions.

Extremely Dark skin

Some extremely dark people are rich in melanin pigments, especially eumelanin. Many were not accepted in the fashion and beauty industry amid bullying and teasing. Today, they are fashion and beauty icons challenging the perception that light skin is better. They also told their stories of how they were convinced to bleach but rejected that idea. They now use the name Melanin Goddess.

Beauty is uniques, and everyone is beautiful. Thanks to a new generation with an emerging positive mindset that is challenging the norms, fighting discrimination, bullying and rejection.

The society is embracing people with different skin conditions and looks leading to inclusion and support for all.

A mind is a powerful tool, and how we use it is what determines our happiness and progress. Diversity is what makes the world beautiful.
