SOUTH AFRICA (African Post online) – South Africans protest the arrest and jailing of former president Jacob Zuma. The protest turned violent amidst rioting, looting and shootings.
Soldiers were deployed to curb the situation on Monday, after days of rioting and violent protest by pro-Zuma protesters in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng, his home province.
The government has confirmed the death of six people and 219 arrests.
Videos circulating on social media show armed citizens fire on rioters in Durban, South Africa. Another video shows a prison on fire as prisoners climbed the top of the roof.
Politician, commander in Chief of Economic Freedom Fighters and revolutionary activist, Julius Sello Malema twitted, “No soldiers on our streets! Otherwise, we are joining. All fighters must be ready… they won’t kill us all. We need a political solution to a political problem, not soldiers.#NoToSoldiers“.
His statement shocked some people who construed his statement as an encouragement for rioters to continue their activities and get killed anyway.
Jacob Juma was sentenced to fifteen months imprisonment for contempt of court, a ruling he is now challenging in the court. Zuma refused to appear before the constitutional court of South Africa where he was supposed to give evidence concerning high-level corruption levelled against him during his nine years in office
