GHANA- Friday, August 7, 2020/– The three-member committee tasked by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to probe the death of KNUST student has today submitted it’s reported to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah.

The student Leonard Richard Sam died of stomach ulcer after he was left unattended to by his teachers for fear of the coronavirus.

About a month ago, students held a protest in the school to register their displeasure with the school authorities.

A six-member committee was set up by the Ghana Education Service and presented it’s findings Director-General of the GES Prof. Opoku Amankwa last month.

The committee which was chaired by High Court judge, Justice Samuel Obeng was charged to probe into the events that lead to the death of the final year student.

It was also tasked to look into the protest held by students who blamed school authorities for causing the death of Leonard Sam.

In submitting the report of the committee, Justice Samuel Obeng said that they “have tried and have come up with our report in the stipulated time. We wish to thank the Regional coordinating council for the support that was extended to us throughout our deliberations and also all the witnesses we invited, they were very cooperative and assisted us in all our deliberations. We have tried our best to come up with this report, which in our opinion is a fair representation of all the facts leading to this incidence which occurred at the KNUST Secondary School.”

The Ashanti regional Minister said he is yet to receive the report to submit to the ministry of Education and will do so once he receives it.

“The committee has now completed its work and it’s yet to submit a report to me for onward transfer to the Minister of Education. The basis for the composition is in section 188 of the local governance act 936. The Security and Intelligence Act gives that power to the Regional Security Council to also conduct investigations into such matters when some security issues are involved.”

Following the incident, headmistress of KNUST SHS, Felicia Asamoah Dankwaa who was accused of looking on while Richard died was interdicted by the Ghana Education Service.
