The Coastal Development Authority has designed the CODA Drive initiative funded by the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP) in which they have introduced Bajaj Qute four-passenger quadricycles to drivers and okada riders.
This is an attempt to address the issue facing public transport and to promote development and jobs for Ghanaians.
According to the Coastal Development Authority, the CODA Drive initiative would also address road safety issues within the Coastal Development Zone.
The vehicles will be given to them on hire-purchase for use as public transport.
In February this year, the Ghana government through the Director of Research for the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at the Ghana Police Service indicated the intention of the government to introduce commercial motorcycles to regulate the usage of okada and motor tricycles in Ghana.
Okada as public transport in Ghana has taken a centre stage in the political debate between the NDC and the NPP for the upcoming 2020 general election.
Presidential candidate for the NDC, Mr Mahama declared his intention to legalise the okada but would regulate it. He added that it has created jobs for Ghanaians and has come to stay.
However, many Ghanaians are not in favour of the legalization of okada because of the increasing number of accidents and deaths in the country.
