GHANA- Tuesday, July 28, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/— Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah has revealed that reduction of transport fares would take effect August 1, 2020.
Following the president’s order for commercial vehicles to operate on full capacity, COPEC called on major stakeholders in the transport sector to reduce transport fares to ease the difficulty of Ghanaians.
In line with the safety measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the president, Nana Akufo Addo directed all commercial drivers to reduce the number of persons in their vehicles by half.
This was to enhance the social distancing safety protocols.
In a meeting with the Ghana Private RoadTransport Operators (GPRTU) and other stakeholders, it was agreed that transport fares would be reduced by 10%.
Engaging with Joy news, Duncan Amoah says that the decision was reached because “we didn’t think that it was still fair against Ghanaians that they maintain transport fares where they were”.
He acknowledged however that it was difficult to get the commercial drivers to along with the decision but the move was necessary.
He further stated that the implementation would be “largely spearheaded by the GPRTU across the terminals. One expects that by Saturday the first of August whatever fares that the road transport operators are charging currently will see a review downwards”.
He called on Ghanaians to “commit to the process” and ensure that the fares were reduced per the directive and new fares will be published by the GPRTU by Saturday.
Several Ghanaians called for fares to be reduced by transport operators since the president said they could operate on full capacity.
