GHANA- Monday, July 20, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/ A video circulating on social media and sent to African Post Online shows one Ghanaian called Martinson emotionally appealing to the government of Ghana to assist and repatriate over 100 Ghanaians stranded in Lebanon.

He further called on Kennedy Agyepong to help repatriate the stranded Ghanaians mostly women in Lebanon.
According to Martinson, he believes that when Kennedy Agyepong sees the video he will act on it.

With sentiments, he mentioned the name of the first lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo since she is the first lady of Ghana appealing to her to send the message to her husband to assist her children.

Without leaving any stone unturned, he mentioned Dr Bawumia and his wife Samira Bawumia to also assist the stranded Ghanaians out of their deplorable condition.

According to Martinson, the stranded Ghanaians in Lebanon have been sleeping on mattresses placed on the floor and accommodated through the kind help of Paloma, the Lebanese community and one Mr Millet at Spintex in Accra.

In June, about 200 Ghanaian domestic workers from Lebanon have been evacuated to Ghana through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, there are over 600 Ghanaians in Lebanon, mostly domestic workers who are still stranded and are appealing to the government to assist them to return home.

Ghanaian domestic workers in Lebanon

Ghanaians are known to travel to Lebanon to carve a niche as domestic workers. However, many have experienced horrifying human rights abuses and in extreme cases death in Lebanon from their hosts.

A recent case of human rights abuse and death of a Ghanaian domestic worker was that of Faustina Tay, a 23-year-old. Faustina requested that she return home due to the harsh working conditions, which includes no days off, an average of six hours sleeps at night, little privacy, beatings, and sleeping on a sofa in the kitchen.
Faustina was consistently beaten that she sent dozens of desperate text messages and more than 40 minutes of voice notes to activists and her brother in Ghana. Faustina was later found dead on March 14 in a car park under her employer’s fourth-floor home in Beirut’s. The forensic report state that the cause of death was a fall from a high place.

Covid-19, stranded Ghanaians, border closure and repatriation

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, many Ghanaians have been stranded abroad due to border closures across the world. Countries like Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, South Africa, and more have since the easing of lockdown been repatriating its citizens. Some Ghanaians have already been repatriated from China, the US, Britain, and Lebanon. However, with the spike in covid-19 cases, Ghana’s borders remain closed.
