Vice Presidential Candidate for the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has assured teachers of improved remuneration if the party is voted into power after the December polls.
She also promised teachers and nursing trainees of innovative financial interventions, including increased training allowances and educational loan facilities to enable them have a successful training.
The former Minister of Education, gave these assurances during separate interactions with trainee teachers and representatives of teacher unions at the Gbewaa College of Education and trainee nurses at the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College among other professional bodies at Bolgatanga on Saturday, the last day of her tour of the Upper East region.
The NDC’s running mate noted that the party’s manifesto details a comprehensive and robust action plan which will address the needs of trainee teachers and nurses.
She further stressed that the NDC manifesto “is of a different nature this time” as a result of innovative policies that the party seeks to introduce in an effort to do more for the nursing and teaching professions.
Madam Opoku-Agyeman added that the new policy programmes is designed with the average Ghanaian in mind and has integrated the views of the various teaching and nursing professional groups across the country in order to achieve the party’s goal of an all-inclusive government.
“We need to work together by listening to each other. We need to be non-discriminatory, we need to plan together. Today, when your leaders ask me what we will do when we come to power, I also ask them, what do you want us to do for you? We want to arrive together, so we must do things together,” Prof Opoku-Agyemang stated.
In response to questions from participant’s issues concerning recruitment, upgrading and maternity leave, Professor Opoku-Agyeman expounded on policy measures to be pursued by the next NDC government. She said the teacher upgrading structure will be streamlined and reinforced to ensure equal recruitment opportunities for all.
The Vice Presidential candidate also reiterated the party’s earlier assurance to extend maternity leave period from three to four months will include teachers, nurses and other professionals
“Giving four months of maternity leave to women is in order,” the running mate stressed.
