ZIMBABWE- President Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe campaigns for the removal of economic sanctions placed on the country for a long time.
Other African leaders joined him to condemn, and to call for the removal of economic sanctions put on some African countries especially Zimbabwe and Sudan and also Cuba.
President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, President of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli, Yoweri Museveni, president of Uganda and President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa all joined the campaign to appeal for the removal of sanction against members of the African Union.
The European Union was the first to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe in 2002 in retaliation to violence, the intimidation of political opponents, and the harassment of the press. The United States followed by imposing sanctions in 2003 targeted at the Government of Zimbabwe, including financial and visa sanctions against selected individuals, a ban on transfers of defence items and services, and a suspension of non-humanitarian government-to-government assistance.
President Mnangagwa’s campaign for the removal of economic sanctions was twitted on Twitter with the hashtag, ZimSantionsMustGo. However, some commentators appeal to the president for a total reform and a new constitution. Some claim African leaders do not have the power or authority to decide for the removal of the sanctions as they were not the imposers.
Sanctions affect the innocent citizens and not the government, a Twitter user stated.
