GHANA- Wednesday, July 15, 2020,/ https://africanpostonline.com/ Vice President H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has visited the Rent Control Department to observe their operations and understand their challenges.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was accompanied by the Minister for Works and Housing Hon. Atta Akyea and his deputy Hon. Mrs Barbara Ayisi.

According to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, he earlier announced the decision of the government to digitize the operations of the Rent Control Department.

The digitization will enable landlords and tenants to register as well as submit their tenancy agreements electronically to reduce the queues at the office and enhance efficiency

Also, each property will be uniquely identified by the digital property address and from next year all complaints by tenants or landlords can be filed online.

Rent advance in Ghana has been a big issue for citizens who have to save enough money to pay for rent for a minimum of one year to two years or even more. This has created so much difficulty in renting an affordable house in ghana. The Vice-president stated that in addressing the issue the government will be introducing a new programme to bridge the information and financial gap between tenants and landlords on rent advance.

“The programme will enhance the creditworthiness of tenants and therefore reduce the need for large rent advance requests by landlords. The government will also be focusing, going forward, on increasing the stock of low-income social housing for rent.” He asserted.

In addressing the challenges of the Government’s inability to enforce the rent control laws the Vice-President noted that cabinet has also received and is working on a new Rent Control Bill to replace the existing Rent Control Act (Act 220), passed in 1963. This will enhance the enforcement powers of the rent control board amongst others.

Ghana is faced with housing deficit which has enabled many landlords to exploit tenants and demand ridiculous rent advances in the country making it hard for even Ghanaians with middle-income earnings to afford quality houses to rent.
