GHANA- Wednesday, July 29, 2020/ https://africanpostonline.com/— Transport fares are expected to be reduced by August 1, in view of this, the Concerned Drivers Union has expressed its displeasure with the move.
The president in his address to the nation concerning measures the government had taken to fight the coronavirus said that all commercial vehicles could operate on full capacity.
In a meeting held yesterday July 28, 2020, between The transport Ministry, The Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Progressive Transport Owners’ Association, State Transport Company, Metro Mass and VIP, it was agreed that transport fares would be reduced by 10%.
Speaking to Citi News, however, Vice-Chairman of the Union, David Agboado said: “We are not in support of the 5 per cent left for us”.
The group had increased fares by 30% instead of the 15% directive given by the government.
He further stated that “now that the COVID-19 restrictions have somehow calmed and we should go to normalcy. So the 30 per cent will be abnormal so we will reduce it but not to that 5 per cent.”
Transport fares were increased by 15% in July after the government gave the directive for the number of persons in commercial vehicles to be reduced by half.
Increase in fuel prices due to the pandemic also contributed to the rise in transport fares.
