ENGLAND (African Post online)- Football fans globally were shocked and disappointed in the events of racist abuse meted out to British footballers Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka on Sunday, July 11, 2021.
The unfortunate event exposed extreme racism in England when the three renowned footballers failed to score a penalty during a penalty shootout after extra time during the Euro 2020 soccer championship final match between England and Italy at Wembley stadium in London.
England eventually lost to Italy in the European Championship final, #Euro2020Final, a shootout 3-2 after the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The loss angered English fans, who vent their anger on the three footballers.
The FA asserted that they would do all they can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.
People have called on social media companies to find a solution in ending abuses on various platforms apart from blocking accounts. Others also called on Governments and institutions, including FIFA to address discrimination and racism in football.
Many condemned the act and alledged that black footballers are celebrated only when they succeed, unlike their white counterparts are not permitted to fail.
