Free SHS caused students scandal- Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT)

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) association has added its voice to the recent scandals observed in some Senior High Schools over ongoing West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The president of the association, Philipa Larson says that students complained about the examination because they took it for granted.
Her comments were made on the back of riots that happened in some senior high schools because students claimed that the questions were too difficult and invigilators were strict.

Some students went the extent of destroying school property and attacking invigilators. A graphic reporter was injured in the process.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) in response to the situation dismissed 14 students and barred them from writing the rest of the exams. The president, Nana Akufo- Addo has, however “has directed the Minister for Education, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to engage the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reconsider its decision”.

Speaking on Starrfm this morning, president of GNAT says that students took the examinations for granted because of the free SHS policy.
“Some students took the exams for granted. Maybe they thought because the SHS education was free, the exams were going to be free, in the sense that questions were going to be cheap,”

She added that “as a country, we should look at corporal punishment and bring it back in a way”.
