The Year of Return, Ghana 2019 is an initiative of the government of Ghana intended to encourage African diasporans to come to Africa (specifically Ghana) to settle and invest in the continent. Its year, 2019, is symbolic, as it commemorates 400 years since the first enslaved Africans touched down in Jamestown, Virginia in the United States.
Other African Countries have taken the bold step in implementing a similar event in bringing Africans abroad to Africa. Nigeria has launched The Door of Return, a reference to the “Door of No Return”, a monument commemorating the transatlantic slave trade. On 24 August 2017, Nigeria erected the first symbolic Door of Return monument as part of the Diaspora Festival in Badagry
Benin chooses to follow the race by launching the Gate of Return. The Gateway of No Return is a monument where millions of Africans were forced into slave boats on this beach, never to return.
Ghana has set the pace in launching a new era of cooperation between Africa and the Diaspora, advancing the economic development of Africa, generating revenue through tourism, infrastructure and renewable energy.
